Challenged by The Thought of Working Out

So, you’re challenged by how to get started and maintaining a workout routine for an active way of living. You could go join a gym or club that caters to people looking for a bargain on their membership. If you are one of thousands who know that you have to do something, but what, I hope you take a moment to read through this blog. My aim as your fitness and health practitioner is to give you information that is fun, entertaining and above all, get you started on a physically active way of living. This blog as well as all-future blogs will be based on real life stories. As you read Christina’s story look for similarities in your way of living.

For the last ten years Christina has been focused on everything from having children and raising them, to helping her husband, Bob build his career; which ranges from sleep deprivation to chasing toddlers down the aisles of grocery stores. She has recently gone back to working outside of her home, however; she still has a home life that needs her attention. Her workday starts before 5:00am and runs until about 10:00pm. She said she has thoughts about what is happening to her body, but because she lacks the time, knowledge, or motivation it takes to act, she doesn’t. Christina is also on an eating regiment of foods that are not really good for her, but taste good to her.

She starts her morning with between two and four cups of caffeinated coffee. She then gets into the commute while listening to talk radio about all of the negativity going on--- that she can’t do anything about, but thinks it’s important to know. Like a daily alarm clock, Christina begins to get a slight headache with mild dizziness, it must be lunchtime. After wolfing down her lunch with two fellow employees in the same deprived state, Christina usually manages to get back to work and keep going strong until about 2:30pm; when her desire for sleep begins to take control of her concentration. With an occasional nodding off she is able to make it through her daily work. She usually sits down to eat dinner with her family at about 7:45pm. One night Bob tells her she received an invitation to attend her ten-year class reunion. Her first reaction is “Oh, my goodness, what will I wear”, “I’ve gained so much weight”. Excited by the invitation Christina goes to bed thinking how fun it would be to see some of her friends from college. Her moment of exhilaration is short lived; she could not go looking like this. Before going to sleep,

Christina asked herself these questions:

  • Can I do this on my own or do I need help?
  • How can I use this special event to be the catalyst for starting a workout routine?
  • How do I lose over forty pounds within six months?

Christina, like most of us find ourselves desperate about losing weight and become motivated, by any means necessary; usually a quick fix, a pill or some other gimmick is used to promote weight lose without becoming physically active. If you are struggling with the same dilemma Christina is, let’s look at what she had to do to help her remove her sense of desperation:

  1. Understand the differences between what she should, could, would or ought to do and what she is willing to do
  2. Choose what motivates her to define her willing intention for results
  3. Keep a written log to balance unhealthy influences
  4. Learn how to eat healthfully without deprivation or guilt
  5. Seek counsel to assist her in maintaining focused experiences
  6. Work out within her body’s capacity to achieve physical balance
  7. Act decisively to remove obstacles from her daily routine
  8. Organize her daily routine around encouraging experiences to maintain her focus
  9. Create her daily work routine around her purpose for working out
  10. Realize that starting today will eliminate the need for starting tomorrow
  11. Remove the fear of challenges by being determined
  12. Use past results from predesigned experiences to guide present actions
  13. You can use these twelve commitments as did Christina to help you get started and maintain your effort. It does not matter which commitment you start with first just that you start. Remember, the secret to starting and maintaining a workout routine for a physically active way of living is being aware of the connection between how your mind thinks about what your body is feeling. Starting and maintaining an active workout routine may not be effortless, but it doesn’t have to be complicated. Change is difficult, for everyone. To create new habits that last, you must not only be committed to change, but must be prepared for the normal resistance all of us feel. By following these blogs you will gain confidence and the ability to prepare yourself; as you reach the aims you have set for yourself, you will learn how to make a fit and healthy way of living a permanent part of your life. Until next time:

    “Believe in yourself”

“Persist even when change is slow”

    “Take care of yourself”

    “Think independently”
